Adele Casagrande set up a leather and fur workshop in Rome in 1918. She married Edoardo Fendi in 1925 and reanmed her workshop Fendi. In 1938 they opened a second shop in Rome.The couple had five daughters and in 1954 when Edoardo Fendi died, the daughters took over Fendi. Their mother died in 1978.

The five daughters took over 5 different roles in the business – furs, leather, customer relations, business co-ordinator and sales. In 1965 Karl Lagerfield joined them and created the FF logo.

Fendi created a clothing range to wear under their furs, and later created a younger clothing line called Fendissime. Lagerfield created accessories to go with their clothing collection.

Prada/LVMH bought up 51% of shares in Fendi in 1999. In 2001, Prada's 25% stake was sold to LVMH, making LVMH the current majority shareholder in Fendi.

Adele’s granddaughter, Maria Silvia Venturini Fendi is currently head of the style department, and their chief designer is still Karl Lagerfeld. Fendi continue to produce cutting edge designs and bold accessories. Fendi has stores worldwide including a flagship store in New York.
